音のいる日常

家族３人のためのマンションリノベーションプロジェクト。夫婦は共にピアノを演奏することから、家にはグランドピアノがあった。しかし、以前暮らしていた住宅では、狭い部屋にピアノが押し込められ、演奏ができるような状態ではなかった。

施主に要望やさまざまな話を伺っていると、幼少期には廊下の途中にピアノが置いてあり、トイレに行く時に少し弾いてみたり、テレビのCMの合間にCMで流れている曲を即興で演奏するなど、ピアノが日常の中に溶け込んだ生活を送っていたことがわかった。それを聞いて、彼らにとっては付随的に音が日常にあるというよりか、人がそこにいるように、音が日常にいるのだと感じた。

設計にあたり、どのように彼らの新しい住まいに、音のいる日常を取り戻すことができるかと考えた。1LDK、床面積の合計が50㎡という限られた空間の中で、グランドピアノ、キッチン、家具などを等価なオブジェクトとして扱い、それぞれの関係性にヒエラルキーが生まれないものの置き方を模索した。結果的に、LDKに置かれたグランドピアノの周辺に散らばるように、キッチンや家具、クローゼットを角度をつけながら配置することで、空間のどこにいてもピアノと近い距離感で生活ができる空間の構成となった。

音が日常の中心に戻り、新たに始まる彼らの生活はどのようなものだろうか。

楽しげな音と空間が混ざり合い、続いていく心地よい暮らしを、時々お邪魔しながら体験してみたいと思っている。

Where Sound Lives

Apartment renovation project for a family of three.

The couple both play the piano, so they had a grand piano at home. However, in their previous home, the piano was squeezed into a small room, and it wasn’t in a condition that allowed for proper playing.

When I listened to their requests and various stories, I learned that during their childhood, a piano was placed in the hallway, and they would play it a little while passing by on the way to the bathroom or improvise the songs playing on TV during commercial breaks. The piano had blended naturally into their daily life.

From this, it became clear that for them, the presence of sound wasn’t just something secondary to their daily routine; it felt more like sound, as if it were a living entity, was integrated into their everyday lives.

In designing their new home, I thought about how we could bring back the sound-filled daily life they once had. In the limited space of a 1LDK apartment, with a total floor area of 50 square meters, I treated the grand piano, kitchen, furniture, and other elements as equal objects, and sought ways to arrange them without creating a hierarchy between them.

In the end, by positioning the kitchen, furniture, and closet at angles scattered around the grand piano placed in the living-dining room (LDK), the layout allowed them to live close to the piano from anywhere in the space.

Now that sound has returned to the center of their daily life, what kind of new life will they begin? 

I look forward to experiencing their joyful sounds and the harmonious space that will continue to unfold, occasionally visiting to witness their comfortable life in progress.
